WHAT IS A HEART ATTACK?
A heart attack occurs when a part of heart muscle tissue dies because its supply of oxygenated blood has been cut off. Typically a BLOOD CLOT gets lodged in a CORONARY (HEART) ARTERY that has been narrowed by ATHEROSCLEROSIS (cholesterol). The supply of blood is cut off and the heart muscle beyond the clot is starved of oxygen rich blood and is therefore DAMAGED.
